A complete guide to every act of worship Muslim women can do during their menstrual period (hayd). Stay connected to Allah — your spiritual journey never stops.
"You are not impure. Menstruation is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam."
— The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Bukhari 298, Muslim 297)
Understanding the rulings gives you freedom — most worship remains open to you during hayd.

The remembrance of Allah is unrestricted at any time. Tasbih, tahleel, takbeer, and all forms of dhikr are open to you throughout your period.
"O you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance."
Quran 33:41
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of deeds is that you die while your tongue is moist with the remembrance of Allah." (Ibn Hibban) There is no condition of ritual purity for dhikr.
Du'a is the essence of worship. There is no condition of purity for du'a — you can call upon Allah freely at any moment, in any language.
"And your Lord said: Call upon Me, I will respond to you." (Quran 40:60)
Du'a is the one ibadah that transcends all states and conditions. The Prophet ﷺ called it "the brain of worship" (Tirmidhi).
Listening to the Quran, reflecting on its meanings, and studying tafsir are all permissible. The restriction is on touching the physical mushaf — not on engaging with the Quran itself.
Note: There is a scholarly minority view (including some Maliki and Hanbali positions) that reciting Quran during menstruation is fully permissible with the intention of recitation, not prayer. Consult your local scholar if needed.
Sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ is one of the most beloved and rewarded acts to Allah. It is unrestricted during menstruation.
"Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings on him and salute him with worthy salutation." (Quran 33:56)
For each salawat you send on the Prophet ﷺ, Allah sends ten blessings upon you, ten of your sins are erased, and you are raised ten degrees. (Muslim)
Charity is among the most powerful acts of worship. Even a smile is sadaqah. Your period is a perfect time to give and increase in generosity.
"Charity never decreases wealth." (Muslim)
Studying Islam — fiqh, seerah, hadith, aqeedah — is an act of worship with tremendous rewards. Your period is an ideal time to invest in your Islamic education.
"Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim." (Ibn Majah)
Seeking forgiveness is one of the most loved acts by Allah. The Prophet ﷺ himself made istighfar over 70 times daily despite being sinless.
"Whoever does evil or wrongs himself but then seeks Allah's forgiveness will find Allah most forgiving, most merciful." (Quran 4:110)
An hour of sincere reflection on the creation of Allah and His signs is considered greater than a year of optional worship in some scholarly statements.
"In the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day there are signs for people of understanding." (Quran 3:190)
Being kind to your family, serving your parents, raising your children with Islamic values — these are all acts of worship with major rewards.
"Jannah lies under the feet of mothers." (Nasai)
Use this time to plan what you will do after your period — new goals, surahs to memorize, fasts to make up, daily routines to build.
The scholar Ibn al-Qayyim said that one of the signs of a person's love for Allah is that they plan and prepare for worship the way a traveler plans a journey.
Having your period during Ramadan can feel like a spiritual loss — but it doesn't have to be. Many of the greatest rewards of Ramadan are available to you without fasting or praying salah. Here's how to make the most of it.
Remember: You are excused from fasting and the rewards you miss are not lost — Allah is Al-'Adl (The Just). The Prophet ﷺ said: "If a person is sick or travelling and cannot do what they used to do, Allah writes for them the same reward as when they were healthy and resident." (Bukhari)
Set a daily target — 1,000 SubhanAllah, 1,000 Alhamdulillah. Use a physical tasbih or a counter app. The reward is immense.
You can attend the masjid (according to some scholars) or listen to taraweeh at home. Reflect deeply on the Quran being recited.
Make a list of 20–30 things you want from Allah and dedicate 20–30 mins daily to sincere dua, especially in the last third of the night.
If your period falls on the last 10 nights, stay up in the last third making dua, dhikr, and istighfar. The night is better than 1,000 months — and dua is available to you fully.
Even $1/day in Ramadan carries massive rewards. Online platforms make it easy to give every single day of your period.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever gives iftar to a fasting person will have the same reward as the person fasting." Prepare or contribute to iftar meals.
These are powerful supplications perfectly suited to make during your period — for protection, gratitude, guidance, and connection with Allah.
